Time to Get Ready to Race
AMA MembershipBefore you hop on the bike and head out to race with us, the first thing you will need to purchase is your American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) membership . If you don’t have an AMA card yet, please click the AMA logo below. The cost is $49 for individual, $98 for family up to 4 members, $29 for riders 11 and under or $20 for a one day event. If the rider is younger than 18, you will need to fill out an AMA minor release form. If the rider is “special needs”, please inform the Club Referee and Rescue 3 (or on site medical provider). This rider will also need a parent or legal guardian on site. If you sign up for your AMA card online, make sure you either print or take a photo of the “receipt” showing that you paid and show this to the officials at sign-up.

Class and Skill LevelAfter you sign up for an AMA card, you will need to decide which class you would like to race. District 37 runs classes based on the combination of the racer and the bike being raced to ensure that all of us have a good time. Once you determine your class based on your age and bike displacement, you will need to decide what skill level to race. Skill level is based on your riding ability and racing experience. AMA District 37 offers five skill levels: Pro, AA, Expert, Intermediate, and Novice. If you have a license from another race organization, this will help place you in the proper skill level so you will get the most enjoyment out of our race series. If you are new to racing, try the beginner skill level to gauge your racing ability against other racers. If you are still unsure and need help with skill level and rider classification, click here to contact your steward.

District 37 LicenseAfter determining the class and skill level to race, you will also want to purchase a District 37 license to earn points towards an earned number for next year. You can purchase a license online for $33; any additional license $23; click the link below for the series you wish to earn points. Purchasing a license at the race sign-up is $40 and you will be given a temporary number for your number plate. Use this number at all future events until your permanent number arrives in the mail. If you do not care to earn points or a trophy, you may purchase a pie plate at the race for $10 in addition to the entry fee and you will be given a number to use for a single event.

You can choose to ride only one loop at any Hare and Hound or Desert Scramble anytime, but you will receive only 70% of class points. Once you have filled out your entry form and have your helmet in hand along with your AMA card and D37 card (if you pie plate, you will purchase that at the end), find the line that starts at the beginning of sign ups. The officials will ask to see your AMA card, D37 license and your entry form. They will guide you through the line where you will pay your entry fee via check or cash only. Every event will have printed rider instructions with information specific to that event. Please pick up a copy and read them after you complete sign up. At all desert races, except for European Scrambles, after the official takes your entry form you will be given a fender card. Tape this card, blank side up, to the top of your front fender. At the end of the race, officials will remove your fender card and it will be checked to see if you stayed on course and went through every check point.
We also use moto-tally for scoring. You can purchase a $10 transponder at the race. This is a small sticker that goes under your helmet visor and can be used at all District 37 races.
All motorcycles must have USFS approved spark arrestor, a green, red, or out of state registration, or license plate and meet the 96 dbs sound requirement. Sound and Tech Inspection is usually located near sign-up. Random testing shall be based upon month number of the Sunday on the weekend of the event (even or odd). If Sunday’s month number is an odd number, then participants who have an odd riding (license) number will be responsible to obtain and pass sound test prior to the start of the event. If Sunday’s month number is an even number, then participants with an even riding (license) number will be responsible to obtain and pass sound test prior to the start of the event. Generally speaking, if your riding number is odd then you will sound check on odd number months. If your riding number is even, then you will sound check on even months.

- Camaraderie with other club members and clubs is priceless.
District 37 Racing Formats
The Desert ScrambleA Desert Scramble event is a marked course that is run over natural desert terrain. It consists of one 30 to 50 mile loop that is run twice. No portion of this loop should require a well skilled novice racer to get off their bike to overcome terrain or obstacles.
|
The Hare and HoundA Hare and Hound event is a marked course that is run over natural desert terrain. It consists of two separate and distinct loops of at least 30 to 50 miles. Loop one normally tends to be faster and less technical. Loop two tends to be more technical and requires more rider skill. National Hare and Hounds are typically a little more demanding.
|
The European ScrambleA European Scramble event is a marked course that is run over natural desert terrain. It consists of one loop between 6 miles and 16 miles. All riders run the same loop over and over for the duration of the event, which lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour.
|
The Sprint EnduroA Sprint Enduro is a timed event run on a marked course over natural desert terrain, but there is no time keeping involved. There are usually three to four test sections that are two to seven miles in length. Depending on the class, you will be required to complete certain select test sections four to six times. This is a race against the clock. Starts are one rider every 20 seconds. Very challenging and fun!
|
The Grand PrixA Grand Prix event is a closed course event that includes both natural and graded terrain. In other words, parts of the course are run on a motocross style track and parts of the course are run on natural or desert terrain. the length of the course is between five and eight miles. Each race is 45 to 55 minutes in duration. The unclassified races are normally ridden to preview the course. Many riders will race multiple classes. Grand Prix races are very family friendly with many vendors and plenty of good spectating.
